Who is Heather?

Thank you for this opportunity to present myself and to share a bit of my story. My name is Heather Krog and I am a Coach, Cultural Mentor and Inclusion Facilitator who supports people and organizations in the United States and Denmark. I am a lifelong learner whose journey has been shaped by my Catholic upbringing in New York, in lively homes that featured Guyanese, British and Bajan cultural influences. My creative interests include epicuriosity, neology, gardening and playing with acrylic paint. A pedagogue at heart, I know that my purpose is to meet people on their journeys of learning and development and to encourage them to keep going.

My Danish chapter began in 2002 with a transformative study abroad experience, that founded my decision to relocate upon graduating from Georgetown University. My initial impressions of life in Denmark were that this was a space in which people worked efficiently and worked to live as opposed to living to work. While studying at Copenhagen Business School the scholar in me was ignited and I remain ever curious about understanding Denmark and America looking at each country through the other’s lens.

Having started my journey in Denmark at the tender age of 20, I decided that it was of utmost importance that I learned the language. So, I continue to do so, while observing and reflecting on Danish culture and how it has evolved during the two decades of my stay, so far.

What has your career journey been like? What are some of your Achievements?

To date, my greatest achievement has been taking the bold step to establish my own consultancy, Garble, an inclusion firm, which builds bridges, one conversation at a time. This venture is an outlet for all my professional and academic prowess, which I could not seem to find the right match for via traditional job searches. I have learned so much during my academic and professional career that has me poised to coach players on the basketball court, local politicians in town hall, and individuals seeking the path on which they can thrive in Denmark.

What is the best piece of advice that you received?

Growing up, my mother told me, don’t put anybody above your head. This piece of advice encourages me to maintain the sense of self necessary to live a life of humility, not humiliation.

What are some of your Aspirations?

In my flights of fancy, I imagine the life I would be living if I attended culinary school instead of college. So, my latest aspiration is to pave the way for my Career 3.0 move into the culinary arts.

Riding on the strength of my ancestral genes and the incredible family I was lucky enough to be born into, I am inspired by the hope to live up to the greatness that I believe I am capable of.

Growing up, my mother told me, don’t put anybody above your head. This piece of advice continues to serve me when I find I must decipher between being humble or humiliated.
Knowing what I know now, I would tell 20-year-old Heather, who just moved to Denmark: Just stay true to your purpose and this will eventually all make sense.

What are you working on now?

In this exciting phase, I am building up my coaching client base and developing inclusion projects that leverage my years of intercultural and board-member experiences here in Denmark.

Rapid fire questions to Heather

1. Who is one of your role models and why?

The maternal figures in my life continue to be role models for me as I raise children who will have wider choices as gender norms continue to shift.

2. What is one book you think everyone should read?

Of the books I have read (and I am still searching for the pure joy of reading), I would name, Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.

3. If you could live and work in any country, which one would it be?

For me, it is a combination of living in Denmark and working in Denmark and the US, which suits me best.

4. What would be the title of your autobiography?

The title of my autobiography would be:

‘Still Figuring it Out…My Journey to Knowledge Through Lived Experience and the Tension/Freedom of Not Knowing What I Don’t Know’
