Who is Ifeoma?

My name is Ifeoma Okpala Aina, British born and Nigerian raised, living in Denmark. I lead global learning and development for procurement at Maersk, where we design programs and facilitate timely learning interventions that support our procurement colleagues’ professional development. I am a founding member of ProWoc (Professional Women of Colour Denmark), a non-profit organisation committed to empowering and amplifying the voices of women of colour. I currently serve as President and I am responsible for the strategic direction and operational leadership of the organisation. In addition, I am a global Ambassador for the Special Youth Foundation, which focuses on advancing access to education for African children in underserved communities.

I studied communication and leadership, but much of my real education has come from moving across countries and embracing opportunities that pushed me outside my comfort zone.

At my core, I’m a connector. I love bringing people and ideas together, to facilitate impactful encounters, change of perspectives and narratives.

Outside of work, I’m passionate about travel, food and building community. I’m also deeply invested in supporting women of colour through ProWoc, an initiative that has become a home and a movement all at once.

Achievements and career journey

Achievements

One highlight of my career was being selected to lead the Cargo Execution function for our then Intra-Europe shipping line at Maersk HQ in Denmark. It was my first leadership role with direct reports and transitioning from a skilled individual contributor to a people leader was a stepping stone to other roles in the company. The transition was challenging and the personal growth highly rewarding.

A more recent milestone is directing the transformation of Maersk’s procurement development program where the enhanced MIPE program will include refined learner experience, governance and learning approach. This program will develop the next generation of procurement leaders — and knowing that my work is helping elevate global talent is very fulfilling.

In community work, strengthening ProWoc’s visibility, storytelling, and strategic collaborations stands out. ProWoc represents values I believe in: connection, courage, and representation — and playing a part in its growth is a privilege.

Important choices on her journey

The biggest choice on my journey has been to embrace courage: Courage to move countries, to take leadership roles at Maersk that felt bigger than me at times, and to say yes to building ProWoc when I could have stayed in my comfort zone. Another key choice has been to root myself in service because I believe true success is measured not just by personal milestones but by the support we give to others.

Coming to Denmark and First Impressions

I’ve lived in Denmark for seven years now. Initially, my career with Maersk brought me here — the chance to work at our HQ after many years seemed like the right career move at the time. What I didn’t expect was how much Denmark would become part of my story, not just professionally but personally as well. It has become home through meaningful friendships and the ProWoc community, which turned a professional move into a deeply personal journey.

I had been travelling to Denmark a few times a year for work over many years, so my first impressions came a long time ago. What I found interesting was that what I assumed was Maersk company culture, was actually what I would consider as Danish culture. One of the aspects that stood out to me was that Danes appear to be reserved. However, I was prepared to navigate that having lived in the Netherlands, where I learnt that people are reserved at first, but once you build trust, the (few) relationships with Danes run deep and are worth the patience. That’s also why I was drawn to building communities like ProWoc — to help others navigate that cultural adjustment more smoothly.

Key contributors to Success

One key contributor to my success has been to prioritise building relationships. This is what I value above all else and what I consider as success. I’ve never done this journey alone. Mentors, colleagues, friends, and family have been my scaffolding. Another contributor is purpose — knowing that what I do, whether at Maersk, ProWoc, or the Special Foundation is bigger than me keeps me motivated through challenges. And finally, authenticity: I’ve learned that showing up fully, with my background, culture, and experiences, is a strength, not something to downplay.

Through it all, I anchor myself in faith, have fun and surround myself with positive voices who energise me particularly at challenging times.

Challenges

I have had the privilege of working in a company where it has been possible to choose or create most of my career challenges. I have always sought out opportunities in different countries or different disciplines which required me to stretch myself by learning new cultures, acquiring new skills and knowledge to be able to deliver in different roles over time. I learned the power of humility and vulnerability in that journey – being able to ask for help or be open about what I don’t know. In the process I played my part by seeking out knowledge and bringing my previous experiences to the table as well. Allies, sponsors and mentors, have been invaluable in supporting my journey at different times.

Learning how to create opportunities rather than waiting for them through constructive visibility, building relationships and investing time in extracurricular projects has helped me at various times in my career. I’ve found that having the courage to create what I couldn’t find and be part of solving existing challenges always brought rewards down the line — my part in ProWoc is a good example of that.

Aspirations, motivation and advice

Aspirations
In this phase of my career, I would like to scale the impact of development programs and initiatives to focus on building the next generation of leaders.

I also hope to one day create personal development retreats that blend travel, coaching and wellness, particularly for women who are at crossroads in their careers or personal lives.

Inspiration
Women inspire me. As a new mother I have deeper respect for our strength, capacity, creativity and resilience.

I’d also like to say, people. Every instance of someone finding their voice, making meaningful connections, stepping into possibility or expanding their potential reminds me why I do what I do. The thought that my work can help someone step into their next chapter gives me energy.

Advice
One of the best pieces of advice that I received was from Yvonne Ike, an aunt and mentor.

She said, “When everyone is looking at cutting back – don’t shrink yourself or your horizon to fit into spaces or circumstances, think about how you can expand.”

This advice helps me to challenge myself and go against the crowd when needed.

And knowing what I know now at the beginning of my career, I’d tell myself: “Relax — you don’t have to prove anything. You are already enough. Learn continually, rest properly and trust the process.”

Rapid Fire Question for Ifeoma.

1. Who is one of your role models and why?

My mother. Her faith, life of service and resilience in tough times taught me how to lead with wisdom, strength and grace.

2. If you could live and work in any country, which one would it be?

I am happy living in Denmark but would love to do a stint in Asia at some point. I would live anywhere that allows me to blend purpose, culture, and family.

3. What is one book you think everyone should read?

The Bible. Whether for wisdom, comfort, discipline, poetry, or direction — there is nothing quite like it.

4. What would be the title of your autobiography?

Walking Boldly, Building Bridges. Because that’s what my journey has been: courageously stepping into new spaces and building pathways for others to connect and grow.
