Dear ProWoc Community,

When I accepted the role of Interim President of ProWoc, I felt honoured but As I returned to ProWoc in September after a year away on maternity leave, I find myself reflecting on a season of life that has changed me in ways I am still discovering. It has been a year of immense joy, unexpected challenges, personal growth and, above all, a deeper appreciation for the power of community.

Becoming a mother has been one of the greatest joys of my life. There is something extraordinary about welcoming a new person into the world, watching her grow and discovering a love that stretches you in ways you could never have fully anticipated. Motherhood has brought new meaning to the everyday, a different perspective on time and priorities, and a profound sense of gratitude for the privilege of nurturing another life.

Yet, as beautiful as this journey has been, it has not been without its challenges. Our journey into motherhood began earlier and more unexpectedly than we had planned, and the early months brought uncertainty, worry and moments that tested me in ways I had never experienced before. In navigating this unfamiliar territory, I was reminded that even in our most personal journeys, we are never meant to do life alone.

The gift of friendship and community

Throughout this season, friendship and community became an anchor. The check-ins, thoughtful messages, prayers, practical support and simple reminders that people were thinking of us made a difference that is difficult to put into words. Sometimes, support meant offering a listening ear; at other times, it meant simply being present without needing to have the right answers.

These experiences reinforced something I have long believed but now understand even more deeply: community is not just about the moments when we gather to celebrate. It is also about who shows up in the difficult seasons, who creates space for vulnerability, and who reminds us that we do not have to carry everything alone.

This is one of the things I cherish most about ProWoc. We are a community of women with different backgrounds, experiences, ambitions and stories, but we share a desire to see one another thrive. We may come together through professional development, networking, mentorship or shared experiences, but the relationships we build can become a source of strength far beyond the spaces in which they began.

Embracing new roles and evolving identities

Returning to ProWoc has also invited me to reflect on identity. Before my maternity leave, I was a professional, a leader, a coach, a wife, a friend and a woman deeply invested in building community. I return with all these parts of myself still present, but with a new identity added to the mix: mother.

I am learning that embracing a new role does not necessarily mean leaving old parts of ourselves behind. Instead, it asks us to reconsider how they fit together. Our ambitions may evolve, our priorities may shift, and the way we define success may change. We may find ourselves approaching familiar responsibilities with fresh eyes, asking different questions and making room for a version of ourselves we are still getting to know.

I share this because many of us experience transitions that reshape how we see ourselves: becoming parents, changing careers, stepping into leadership, navigating relocation, experiencing loss or simply entering a new chapter of life. These transitions can be exciting, disorienting and humbling, sometimes all at once.

I hope ProWoc continues to be a space where we can embrace these evolving identities without feeling that we must have everything figured out. A space where we can celebrate one another’s achievements while also acknowledging the complexity of the journeys behind them. A space where we give ourselves and one another permission to grow, change and begin again.

Returning with renewed commitment

As I step back into my role as President, I do so with renewed gratitude for this community and a strengthened commitment to the work we do together.

ProWoc has always been about more than creating opportunities for women of colour to be seen, heard and connected. It is about helping women build meaningful relationships, navigate professional and personal transitions, access opportunities and feel a greater sense of belonging in Denmark. It is about creating spaces where our stories matter, our contributions are recognised and our potential is not limited by the barriers we encounter.

My own experience over the past year has deepened my conviction that this work matters. We all need spaces where we can bring our whole selves, find encouragement and discover that our individual journeys are strengthened by the people walking alongside us.

As we look ahead, I am excited about what we can continue to build together. I look forward to reconnecting with familiar faces, getting to know newer members and working alongside our board, volunteers, partners and wider community to make ProWoc an even more meaningful part of our members’ lives.

Thank you for the patience, encouragement and support extended to me during my time away. Thank you to everyone who has continued to give their time, energy and heart to ProWoc. Our community is what it is because of the people who choose, again and again, to show up for one another.

I return not as the same person who stepped away, but as someone whose perspective has been expanded by love, challenged by uncertainty and strengthened by community. I am reminded that we do not have to choose between caring for others and pursuing our ambitions; rather, we need communities that help us navigate the many dimensions of who we are and who we are becoming.

Here is to a new chapter for ProWoc, to the friendships that sustain us, to the transitions that transform us, and to the community we continue to create together.

With gratitude and renewed commitment,

Ifeoma Okpala Aina
