#5 Protect your Mental Wellbeing

The world feels harder these days.
Layoffs. Isolation. Uncertainty. Pressure. Burnout.

👉🏽 Being let go from your job can shake you to the core. Your identity, confidence, and sense of direction all stripped away overnight. It can feel like more than just a career setback and more like a psychological shock that exposes just how fragile our wellbeing can be under constant strain.

👉🏽 Those that are still employed face profound pressures and the relentless drive to perform can lead to burnout.

Success depends as much on emotional endurance as on skill, and true leadership begins with protecting your own mental sustainability.

👉🏽 For women of colour, the burden of navigating bias, invisibility, and social isolation further compounds that risk. Being the “one” or the “only” in many rooms is emotionally and mentally exhausting.

This is precisely why self-care and prioritising your mental health is not an indulgence. It is career sustainability.

In high-performance environments, slowing down often triggers guilt, but boundaries, rest, and community support are strategic necessities, because burnout is an irreversible loss of capacity.

👉🏽 The work of healing and protecting your mind is as strategic as any leadership skill.

Here are three science-backed habits that can truly help rebuild resilience:

🧠 Practice Cognitive Reframing
Shift your perspective on setbacks.. Studies show that reframing reduces anxiety and improves emotional regulation.

🌿 Prioritise restorative sleep
Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts emotional control and increases burnout risk. Incorporate daily movement and create a consistent wind-down routine at night, e.g. screens off, mind off.

🤝 Invest in social connection
Harvard’s Study of Adult Development (the world’s longest happiness study) found that strong relationships are the most powerful predictor of wellbeing and longevity.
Call a friend. Join a community. Create your circle of people who will support, uplift and hold you accountable.

In an increasingly dark and stressful world, your mental health is one of your few sustainable assets. Guard it fiercely.

❓ Which one non-negotiable wellbeing activity will you prioritise each week? Movement? Meditation? Meaningful time with others?
