Yvette Miata Petersen
Corporate Vice President, Head of Strategy, Portfolio, Operations, and Communications, Research and Early Development at Novo Nordisk.
In this special February edition, ProWoc celebrates Yvette Miata Petersen.
Who is Yvette?
I am Yvette Miata Petersen, Corporate Vice President, Head of Strategy, Portfolio, Operations, and Communications, Research and Early Development at Novo Nordisk. I hold an Honors Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a PhD in Science from the Royal Veterinary University in Denmark. I have 20+ years global experience in both Biotech (Zealand Pharma) and large Pharma (Roche and Novartis) in scientific, strategic and operational roles of increasing responsibility. I am passionate about muscle training (weightlifting) and enjoy reading fiction whenever possible.
Coming to Denmark and First Impressions
I have resided in Denmark for a total of 13 years, divided into two periods. Initially, I relocated to Denmark in 1997 to pursue my PhD at the Royal Veterinary University. This move also allowed me to be closer to my Danish boyfriend, with whom I had maintained a long-distance relationship for nearly four years. In 2010, my husband and I, along with our family, moved to Switzerland to gain international professional experience. After spending 13 years in Switzerland, we returned to Denmark about a year ago.
I relocated to Denmark the first time from Toronto, Canada. The transition presented several challenges. Firstly, I moved from a multicultural environment to a predominantly homogeneous society with a single primary language and culture. Initially, I felt a sense of discomfort and isolation, as I perceived people staring at me and speaking negatively about me. This feeling was exacerbated by my lack of understanding of the language. Despite these challenges, I remained in Denmark, largely due to the incredible support and strength provided by my boyfriend, and the significant progress in my scientific research. Denmark’s educational support system is exceptional. I was fortunate to receive a PhD financial scholarship, which provided me with a monthly salary, allowing me to focus on my PhD without the distraction of a part-time job.
A wise decision I made shortly after arriving in Denmark was to learn Danish. I enrolled in an intensive, daily language class for six months, which gave me the confidence to communicate and navigate Danish society. Interestingly, I discovered that conversations around me were not always about me but often mundane topics. My initial years in Denmark were marked by intense personal growth, resilience, and the development of tenacity. During this time, I also formed some of my closest friendships, which continue to be a significant part of my life today.
Achievements
What is your greatest achievement and/or career highlight? Why?
My greatest professional achievement is my recent promotion to my current role. This is a position I have aspired to for the past five years, as it combines scientific and operational excellence, two areas I am deeply passionate about. While the achievement itself is remarkable, I have also taken time to reflect on and celebrate the career path, hard work, tears, and laughter, as well as the decisions, both big and small, that have brought me here.
My greatest private achievement is nurturing, together with my husband, four wonderful and loving young adults, each with their own unique dreams, goals, and views on life.
Choices, Challenges and key contributors to her success
Challenges
What challenges have you encountered in your journey and how have you overcome them?
I have experienced many challenges, like most, I would assume. The worst is when others assume you have “reached your glass ceiling” due to some unconscious or even at times conscious bias they have. I have had managers who fully trusted me to elevate them in their careers but with no consideration as to how they could help elevate me in mine. I had a manager who once told me I would likely get a job that both he and I had applied for due to “the focus on diversity,” even though he knew I had the required capabilities. How have I overcome these challenges? It frequently starts with sadness and tears. Once this phase is over, I tend to rebuild myself and take anchorage in the strength of my upbringing and the survival instinct that rages within me. In two instances, I have chosen to find a new opportunity and pursue it. I made this choice intentionally and with confidence, rather than expecting the situation or mindset of my manager to magically resolve when I knew it would not.
Key Contributor to her Success
My upbringing instilled in me values of perseverance, generosity, and tenacity. My mother, a single parent, worked diligently at the United Nations to raise her five children. From a very early age, we were expected to be more independent than our peers. Cooking, cleaning, and doing groceries were fixed parts of our daily routine, and we were expected to manage these tasks without compromising our homework or academic performance.
Another key contributor is my husband who is an exceptional life partner and father. We seamlessly share responsibilities and decisions for our family.
Aspirations, motivation and advice
Aspirations
My aspirations are to continue to deliver professionally, particularly I have just been promoted to a new role. As family and relationships are important to me, I will continue to focus on being a good Wife, Mother and Grandmother (GiGi).
Motivation and Advice
I am motivated by laughter and the honour and privilege of being alive. I am also inspired by bringing people together. I recently initiated “The Table” at Novo Nordisk. It’s a monthly lunch that brings together Women (and soon Men) of Color to share life experiences and celebrate successes in a psychologically safe space. Invitation to The Table spreads by word of mouth and at our last lunch we were 15.
Of all the advice I have received, the best one is “You playing small does not serve the world. Be you.”
And knowing what I know now at the beginning of my career, I would tell myself the following:
The path to reach one’s ambition is unlikely to be straight and easy. It has front steps and back steps, hidden paths, dark corners and bright horizons. In this labyrinth that is our career, always be on the look out for “hands” that will encourage you, support you and propel you forward. They are your Champions, your Community, Your Family!
