Shivani Kondaskar

Lead Commercial Manager @ Ørsted | Board Director | Entrepreneur

In this special October edition, ProWoc celebrates Shivani Kondaskar.

Who is Shivani?

My name is Shivani Kondaskar and I am a naturalised German with Indian roots. I hold a Master’s Degree in International Business from the UK. I am currently based out of Copenhagen and work for Ørsted (Green Energy Company) as a Lead Commercial Manager on the world’s largest offshore wind farm located in the UK. Additionally, I hold Board Director roles in a few Danish and British companies representing Ørsted. I am passionate about advocating inclusion, empowering women & children, social work, organising events to bring people together and learning about cultures. I love exposing myself to new experiences and constantly learning. My interests include cooking, travelling, photography and hiking, being in nature – all of this helps me relax and think creatively.

Coming to Denmark and First Impressions

Denmark Journey

I moved to DK from Germany at the onset of Covid in March 2020. I clearly recall it was the day the borders between the two countries shut and I am so thankful I was on this side of the world united with my family. A loving, highly convincing husband and a promise for better career progression as a woman, good work-life balance brought me to Denmark after two years of long-distance marriage and debates on Germany versus Denmark!

Denmark has been a refreshing move on the front of digitalisation – how seamlessly everything connects to your social ID, e.g. finances and paperwork, makes life smooth. It has been difficult with all the apps I have had to download to stay on top of being well connected and integrated.

At work, I was taken aback at how casual and flat the hierarchies are. I bumped into our CEO and COO on Day 1 and they both personally welcomed me and engaged in small talk. A shift to business casual wear, working very close to contracted hours and using evening time for self, family and wellbeing in general has all been new compared to my previous lifestyle. The trust-based society and how conforming the people here are to the guidelines provided was interesting in comparison to my worldly sense which has taught me to trust with caution and not follow blindly without fully understanding the rationale for doing so. I have been on a learning curve when it comes to maneuvering in work or social situations while challenging the status quo very directly and presenting different perspectives.

Achievements

A career highlight for me was to be offered a Board Director role in 2023. It was a very special moment for me particularly because I was the first woman from our area who got an opportunity to get a seat at the Board representing Orsted in the UK. It was a big move from the leadership on mindset shift to entrust me with this role as a development experience.

Choices, Challenges and key contributors to her success

Choices

I have pivoted often to find new opportunities and experiences for myself. I find that this feature in my life’s journey so far has been instrumental in shaping me as a person. I have packed up to move to and live in four different countries other than my home base – India. Every country has opened my mind to possibilities and learnings that I wouldn’t have had I not decided to move. Careerwise, I have pivoted into a new direction with every new company. As a person who has several interests, it has been important to me to be able to taste a variety of functions and industries, which do end up having a red thread between them all. I can thus use diversity of thoughts from all my experiences in solving business problems.

Challenges

Often being a young, woman of colour either leading projects / initiatives or being the only woman at the table has not been well received. With a business background, I have found myself working in traditionally male dominated, engineering heavy industries – chemicals, gases and energy sectors. I have been challenged on my competence, shut down or ignored when I asked critical business questions, not taken seriously by older male colleagues and this was a challenge much earlier in my career. I continued showing up and doing what I was good at, speaking up when I felt the need to. I had to do a lot of stakeholder management, find allies and sponsors who would intervene when required.

Key Contributor to her Success

Believing in myself and going ahead to do exactly the thing that I was told as impossible to achieve! I have always found ways with the right amount of research and learning from others’ experiences to connect the dots and find a path that was not known to others as being possible.

Aspirations, motivation and advice

Aspirations

One of my goals is to set up an organisation or platform in India that helps empower women and kids. The platform would educate them on various non-conventional topics, and provide exposure to various opportunities that I have been exposed to over the years. It would also be a place where life skills (that I wish I was prepared for) will be taught to thrive in today’s world.

Inspiration

Working towards a goal that serves a purpose for greater good motivates me and gives me the energy to keep going. Engaging in work which makes me grow and where I can see a tangible impact is highly motivating.

Best piece of advice

The best piece of advice that I have received is to bend but do not break. It is something that a mentor told me once and that stuck with me. One must stay true to their values and know their limits of compromise without losing oneself.

Looking back, I can say that at the beginning of one’s career we have tremendous energy and a less biased, fresh brain ready to learn and absorb all the information thrown at you. So one piece of advice I would give to my younger self is to push hard and go for the most challenging roles that you can expose yourself to so that you can gain an edge and head start that sets you up for a successful career track ahead. Even if you fail, you can learn fast, and you will have time on your hand to recover and spring back

Rapid Fire Question for Shivani.

1. Who is one of your role models and why?

Indra Nooyi, Former CEO of PepsiCo. She is a highly relatable role model for me from the perspective of ethnic roots, career journey and life choices. Her career path has opened my eyes to possibilities and experiences that I have vicariously lived through her memoir. Her words of wisdom provide encouragement and hope to aspire and dream bigger, if you have the grit and self-belief to pursue your ambitions, whatever they are – sky is the limit!

2. If you could live and work in any country, which one would it be?

Japan! A country that I have admired for its culture, discipline, values, innovation, focus on continuous improvement (which I am fan of) and beauty – it is a great package from all angles.

3. What is one book you think everyone should read?

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki – it is a well-written, easy to read book. I read it as a teenager, and it changed my perspective on financial freedom and choices in life. I am a strong advocate of women being financially independent, this book is a great start to that!

4. What would be the title of your autobiography?

Kaleidoscope – depicting a life lived with endless possibilities woven together with beautiful colourful stories to share.
