Who is Jiss?
My name is Jiss De León, and I work as a Director of Global Senior Leadership Search in Novo Nordisk. We are an in-house executive search/recruitment function. I have a bachelor in Business Administration, an MBA in Human Resources and other certifications like: Work Climate and Employee Engagement from Universidad Latina de Panama, Leadership from Stanford University and a certification in Ontological Coaching.
I am from Panama (born and raised) with deep Latino roots. I love travelling, collecting books, I am a dog lover who values sharing time and moments with my partner and kids. Family is very important for me and having family close is something I missed here in Denmark. But I have found a strong sisterhood and friends to maintain the engagement in the lack of family. We, as a family, also travel to Panama at least once a year – it is something we need to do to recharge.
Denmark Journey
At first, after our research about the country, we were impressed by the buzz that Denmark had been recognized as one of the best places to live and with the happiest people, best education and best healthcare system. It did not take to long for us to find the reality. I guess once you get to live in a country you start finding out what is real and start comparing to how things were where we came from.
After several years, we have built a better understanding of how things work – the reality of the healthcare system and why is perceived a one of the best places to live. We appreciate the safety of the country – you can get around almost anywhere without fear. We also appreciate the reliable transportation system. Our kids go to an international school which is a very good school with educators committed to the kids and their development. And while there are many things we miss from Panama, we also appreciate the safety and independence our kids can have here.
We moved to Denmark with 3 kids and 3 dogs; so you can imagine how busy our days are between work, school, extracurricular activities, dog walks, etc. It is so much fun!
Important Choices
Moving has also catalysed my development both personally and professionally. I have experienced growing as an individual with more nuanced perspectives: for example, I have developed a better understanding of the company culture, learnt how to leverage the myriad opportunities to network and to become more involved in the company strategy.
Achievements
For me shifting my career from working in finance to HR has been an important highlight. It has been an interesting career shift where I have had the opportunity to grow with professionally.
Challenges
One of the challenges has been raising my kids (especially my 2 teenagers) in a multicultural environment. And while I wouldn’t change my situation, God know is not easy. I have had moments in which I question my parenting style and the biggest challenge is living in a different culture from the culture where you come from. We, as parents try to keep a mid-point and balanced approach on how we raise our kids – is a mix between Latino and Danish. Both are very different – almost opposite.
Key Contributor to Success
It is not a what, it is a who. My mom, who is no longer with us, has been my biggest champion, promoter, cheerleader and inspiration for my decisions and success.
Aspirations
What goal/dream you would most like to accomplish?
I would like to be recognize as someone who left a positive mark in peoples lives. Someone who had real impact on someone. It could either be my helping progress their career, giving good advice, being a supportive friend, mother, partner, daughter, etc.
What inspires and motivates you every day?
My family inspires me every day and I’m also inspired by the mission we have in Novo Nordisk, which is to discover better treatments for people living with a serious chronic disease such as diabetes.
What is the best piece of advice that you received?
I will share two pieces of advice that I received from my mom:
“Believe in yourself and try, you can do it.”
“Anything you do, try doing it the best you can. Not perfect, just give it your best.” This advice has sustained me through out my career.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give to yourself at the beginning of your career?
I would say that it is important to enjoy life. It’s okay to take a pause, explore the world and most of all, enjoy the present moment.
Rapid Fire Question for Jiss.
