📖 Read Miriam’s inspiring story here below.
Who is Miriam?
I am passionate about sustainability in industry, which is why I want to become a chemical engineer. In my free time, I love spending time with friends and family, reading, connecting with new people, and singing by myself or in the local choir.
Life In Denmark
I’ve lived in Denmark for two and a half years now and originally came here from my home in northern Germany for this specific education, as it was hard to find this particular course of study elsewhere
I spent much of my first 1.5 years in Denmark in a bubble of international students and academics. The school or rather university system impressed me and was very encouraging for me in my studies. My first bigger clash with Denmark was the job market, as I tried to find a job from early on in my studies, and did not succeed until the end of my 3rd semester. Then in my newfound student assistant position I started to get acquainted with Danish work culture and social conduct. Moreover, the regular contact with Danes through the choir helped me integrate and understand Danish culture and unspoken rules much better. For example, Danes have a tendency to not give open criticism and praise. Only after some time did I learn to read when someone approved or disapproved of something I did.
Achievements
Achievements and Career Highlights
Given the challenges mentioned above, it was a great achievement for me to land a student assistant position at Rambøll. Prior to that, I only saw myself as a student. This job was the first step for me to understand myself as a professional, and to actively and consciously work on my professional growth.
Important choices on her journey
I have consciously made the choice to not only study, but to grow as a person and have diverse experiences by engaging with my work, my student peers, the choir, events from many different organisers and anything else I can fit into my schedule. I will never know if there are opportunities out there if I don’t go out there and look.
And as all of us have, many times, I have made the choice not to give up and keep trying when faced with adversity. I will continue making this choice. It is not always easy, but we’ll grow and come out stronger.
Key contributors to Success
One key contributor to my success is my ability to persevere and a high pain tolerance. We grow and become stronger through struggle and challenge, but only if we don’t let them break us. Sometimes it’s necessary to hold on and keep going in hard times in order to enjoy the good times ahead.
Furthermore, the people around me, especially every wonderful and inspiring person in my network, were invaluable on my journey. Without them, I would not be in this education, this job or this country, and I am so unbelievably grateful to every single one of them.
Challenges
I also struggled with homesickness and feeling isolated in my first years in Denmark. Building a network and making friends here through university, my job, my choir and countless events helped me feel more settled and connected here.
Aspirations, motivations and advice
Aspirations
My motivation to come to Denmark and enrol in this education was to shape the sustainable transformation of the chemical industry. While this vision has changed and developed over the years, being an active part of the sustainable change in industry remains my most important professional goal. In ten years, I see myself as a team lead, working both with engineering tasks and with leading and management. I’d also like to be part of and organize more interdisciplinary initiatives within engineering and sustainable development, as they are crucial to achieve holistic sustainable development.
Inspiration
I genuinely enjoy both my education and my job, which is an incredible privilege that motivates me every day. Seeing the impact my company, my university and the people around me have on big and small developments motivates me to shape my own positive impact, both professionally and personally.
Getting someone to smile at a comment or laugh at a joke has enough impact on some days. Although it might seem small, connecting to others in such a way brightens both their and my day, and ideally makes both of us feel seen and accepted. It will also aid in any future interaction, since we remember each other positively. Other days I am more focused on long-term goals such as becoming an engineer and developing my career to reach my most important professional goal.
Advice
The advice that is the most meaningful to me is not from anyone specific, but from the general pool of human wisdom:
“Progress over perfection. It’s better to take small steps towards your goals than to wait for the perfect time and place to start”. Non-linear progress is the most natural progress, and it will still get you there if you keep at it.
Since I at the beginning of my career, I remind myself that
Working on myself and working on external achievements is not the same thing, and some inner focus is necessary to sustain outwards performance. Sometimes that can just be taking care of myself well enough to keep going in a healthy and sustainable manner.
It is not sustainable to base one’s self-worth on only measurable performance and external validation; it needs to come from oneself (though that is, of course, much easier said than done).
Rapid Fire Question for Miriam.
1. Who is one of your role models and why?
2. If you could live and work in any country, which one would it be?
That would likely be southern Germany, surrounded by mountains and forest. This is where my soul feels most at home and there is just a bit more sun and warmth.
3.. What is one book you think everyone should read?
I highly recommend Stephen Hawking’s ‘A Brief History of Time’, is an amazing peek into the very fabric of our reality, written in a way that is broadly accessible.
4. What would be the title of your autobiography?
